Puerto Rico’s West Coast:
The Road to Happiness

Text and photos compiled from Internet sources

With more air carriers flying direct from major U.S. cities to airports in Aguadilla and Mayagüez, Puerto Rico's relaxed and rugged west coast has become an easy and affordable tropical vacation spot. Its chief selling point -- the miles and miles of picture-perfect beaches that are almost empty of people -- except in July when most Puerto Ricans go on vacation and head to villages like Rincón, La Parguera and Isabela.

One of the more popular surfbreaks in Rincón is Domes Beach -- named after the now-defunct bright green nuclear reactor that sits over the coast. Domes is one of many beaches along Rincón's famed Route 413, the territory's holy road of surfing. The many waves sometimes reach 20 feet. Nearby restaurants offer seaside dining with fresh fish and other delicacies of Puerto Rican cuisine. On calm days, area dive shops run snorkeling and Scuba trips to nearby reefs.
