David Chafey – Two Families and One Impressive Track Record

By Dan Bariault

When you first meet David H. Chafey, Jr., President of Banco Popular of Puerto Rico, you immediately feel at ease. He is a confident and warm individual with an easy smile. A quick look around his office and you will know what is important to him: his immediate family and his Banco Popular family. His office is filled with the pictures of his wife, Laura Gonzáles, and his five children, David, Beatriz, Jorge, Jaime, and Isabel. Isabel, the youngest, clearly has a special place in her father’s heart, yet he is extremely proud of all of his children. His other family, his Banco Popular family, shares his time and focus, and he is equally proud of them and their respective accomplishments.

David H. Chafey, Jr., is a son of doctors, yet chose a distinctly different path.  A graduate of Colegio San Ignacio, he attended Fairfield University in Connecticut and graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. He later pursued graduate studies in Finance from one of the premier graduate institutions of Finance in the United States, New York University.
