“The Lawyer’s Association has filed several cases in the Supreme Court in defense of lawyers in Puerto Rico. This was stated by Vice-President, Atty. Hector Ramos. "This Association was created to defend the rights of lawyers and so we're doing. This is our duty even though it is not to the liking of some people," said Atty. Hector Ramos.
Law 121 of October 13, 2009 recognized that all attorneys and lawyers in Puerto Rico had the right to freedom of association. According Atty. Ramos, "lawyers in Puerto Rico have the right to choose which organization they want to belong to and may decide not to join one, even the Association. This right is sacred. Every lawyer has the right to select which professional association they want a membership to and an organization should not rely on the coercive power of government through compulsory registration. If the organization is good, the members join. "
On the other hand, the lawyer said that "this law was adopted nearly two years and the Colegio de Abogados has failed to hand over the files of the lawyers who decided not to register. This action violates the law and the right to privacy of lawyers. It is unfortunate that an institution representing lawyers does not comply with the Law. The Association has filed a writ of Mandamus to the Supreme Court, and we expect that the Judicial Forum to assert the law. "
The Association requests that the Supreme Court review the Continuing Legal Education Program:
For his part, Mr. Ramos said that at the request of many members the Supreme Court has been asked to evaluate the Legal Continuing Education Program ("Program") as it is costly not only for lawyers in Puerto Rico, but also has some classifications that violate the right to equal protection of the law and due process of law thereof. "He has asked the Court to stop the program and place it on hold to review its contents and requirements. This program further ensures the training of lawyers, and has become a lucrative industry for a few to the detriment of the lawyers," said Ramos.
The Association issued identification for its members:
Finally, Mr. Ramos reported that members of the Association have an ID. "We had a concern that many lawyers have had problems in the use of the parking lots of lawyers in various courts and access to them. Several courts have chosen to request the identification of the Bar Association. This is despite the fact that lawyers who chose to exercise their right to choose have no identification. In view of this, "the Association is issuing IDs to our members," he said
