Solar Car makes Top 10
A group of 14 students from Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez, better known as DROEM, participated during the month of July in Dallas, Texas at the 2006 Dell-Winston Solar Challenge Competition. The group was accompanied by CROEM Director, Milton Tomassini; their physics teacher, Elba Sepúlveda, and Vivian Delgado, Hertz marketing director. Hertz was the team’s main sponsor.
The group of students, called the CROEM Solar Team, qualified among the top 10 with the debut of their solar car, ‘Caribbean Warrior’, finishing ahead of their vastly experienced rivals from various U.S. schools. “We were always certain that the first and only solar auto built by high school students in all the Caribbean would finish among the top 10. During the seven seasons which lasted approximately three hours daily, the judges evaluated the number of turns around the track, the efficiency, safety, and teamwork,” said Vivian Delgado. “At Hertz, we are dedicated to this project that shows the talent of young Puerto Ricans, and which at the same time enters into the theme of a safer environment, which is an area that merits attention,” added Delgado.
